About iRate Chick

2009 will mark the 40th year of my life. Forty years? What have I done with my life? And why does it feel more like a deadline than a milestone?

Depending who you talk to, 40 is not such a big deal… if you have the picket fence, kids, husband and the extra bonus of a career. So what if you don’t have it all by age 40? Are we supposed to? For Latina women, the pressure is on very early to marry and mass produce. So when your child-bearing years are about to expire, all eyes are on you to come through.

The Problem
Not the usual for women reaching their baby expiration date – finding the right man. I’ve been with the same man for over 20 years and married to him for 5. We both feel there is still time but my body is definitely not on the same plan.

The Hold-Up
The urge to be a filmmaker, fear of losing myself to being someone’s 24/7 mom, and feeling satisfied with my life before bringing a life into it.

This iRate Chick will chronicle my descent into the middle ages with an expiration date stamped on my body, writing anonymously to write freely about intimate issues and life changing moments.
